Russian Bread Set
Hand Made Russian War of 1812 Set (wood, bread set soft center)
Venetian Blown Glass made in 2014
Italian/Czech/Slovak chess set. Reproduction (of original Italian set) by Elizabeth Gann in 2014. The pieces are hand blown in the Czech Republic by master glass blower Vladimir Zubrican; the Baroque style white and amber-colored pieces sit atop brass and turned wood pedestals reproducing an historical design.
Fantastic blown glass globes mounted on beautifully crafted and stained wooden stems with heavy, beautifully designed round metal bases. One side amber color with gold-plated color bases the other white globes mounted with silver-plated color bases. The chess pieces are also Murano-Venetian glass crafted on top of the globes in breath-taking style. King size is 7.5".
This is the story of this set as told by Israel Raphaelli.
Years ago Floyd Sarisohn and his wife visited in Venice, Italy. In the Window of an old antique store they saw this set - dusty and not very appealing. The seller told them that it goes back to late 1700, made by the famous local glass blowing experts. They bought it on the spot, shipped to their home in Long Island, NY. His original set was the model for Elizabeth Gann, who hired a glass master to make a few replicas (embellishing with his own artistic style) in various colors. Only a handful were made.

Probably Russian Caricature set mid 20th Century
Vintage and rare set probably from 1930-1960. The material from which the pieces are made is a kind of compound. It looks similar to plaster, but lighter. It reminds me a little of salt dough, which means it could be a chess set made of an organic composite material. The figures were not produced in a mould, because there are too many differences in the details between the individual pieces for that.
This can be seen, for example, in the bishops, which all look different. It indicates that each individual sculpture was handmade. The pieces themselves resemble comic or cartoon characters from the 1930s or 1940s. However, I have not yet been able to find a specific template after which they were modelled. The kings are about 12.8 cm or 5" tall. The faces of the characters and their postures are heavily exaggerated, as can be seen from some of the detail shots, e.g. red cheeks, red lips, black outlined eyes etc. On the back, the kings have a large coin with a dollar sign at their feet. All in all, an extremely unusual collector's item.
Many thanks to Holger Langer for the photos and the description.

Franklin Mint Royal Houses Britain Heraldic Chess Set, 1982
Rare, Franklin Mint "The Royal Houses of Britain Heraldic Chess Set". Large, heavy, and impressive, this set is truly a work of art. Sold exclusively, by invitation only, this chess set was one of only 2500 made and sold in 1982 for $3,000. Designed by Robert Parsons, an official Herald Painter to the College of Arms, under the direction of John Brooke-Little, Norroy and Ulster King of Arms.
The theme of the set is the historical kingdom of Britain - England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland - and the royal dynasties that have reigned over it for more than 1,000 years, from the early English kings to the ruling house of today, the Windsors.
There are 32 pieces which range from 3 1/2 "- 4 3/4" tall and are perfectly crafted of 24K gold and sterling silver plated pewter with enameled pewter shields that are hand painted with the heraldic symbols of the houses of English royalty. The chess pieces are beautifully detailed on all sides ...note the curled furl on the tail on back of the horses, their detail is fabulous ; from their expressions to their detailed manes and tails!
The spectacular dragons, the regal lions and magnificent falcons are all crafted with equally impressive details. The castles are detailed with a stag running past the entry and more...the solid pieces weigh 6-7oz each and they are incredible. All of the pieces are original pieces of art designed specifically for this set.
The pieces are represented as follows:
The King is the Lion of England, portrayed in the position known in heraldry as 'sejant'. The fierce eyes, flowing mane and long-clawed feet convey to perfection the majesty and power of the king of beasts. The forelegs support a shield decorated with an original design embodying the famous Round Tower of Windsor Castle, encircled with an oak leaf garland.
The Queen, representing Scotland, is shown as the Unicorn (two Unicorns support the royal arms of Scotland). And here, the Unicorn holds a shield decorated with a heraldic thistle emblem, denoting the Stuart royal house.
The Knight, swift defender of Crown and Realm, is symbolized as a magnificent horse rearing up on its strong haunches.
The Bishop is the traditional Dragon of Wales - a fierce, proud creature, powerfully expressing the indomitable spirit of that nation.
The Castle, or Rook, was inspired by the traditional crest of Ireland - a castle together with a handsome stag with full antlers.
Each pawn is crafted in the form of a falcon - traditionally the hunting bird of kings in the Age of Chivalry. Each one has a base decorated with an identical arrowhead motif. But on the shield borne by each pawn is a different heraldic design, representing a different ruling dynasty of Britain. Thus the shield of the King's Pawn bears the crown insignia of Saxe-Coburg - a rich green on a dramatic field of yellow and black stripes.
The King's Bishop Pawn represents the House of Hanover and has a heraldic white horse 'courant' on a red field. The shield of the King's Knight Pawn bears the red rose of Lancaster. And on the King's Rook's Pawn is a portcullis motif denoting the Tudors. The Queen's Pawn carries two lions 'passant guardant' representing the Normans. The Queen's Bishop's Pawn shows the white rose of the House of York, set with a sun symbol. The Queen's Knight's Pawn bears a broom pod - 'Planta Genista' - representing the Plantagenet dynasty. And the Queen's Rook's Pawn stands for the early English monarchs and carries the cross and martlets emblem.
Metal board gold and silver 15 1/2" X 15 1/2" X 1/2" with 2" squares. Total weight of chessmen and board is over 20 lbs.

Italian Piero Benzoni Louis XIV Bronze Gold & Silver Gilt Chess Set
Piero Benzoni has retired for bronze working and making these sets but his chess tables, stools and pieces were always designed after a great period / era or famous past world leaders in particular. This set is one of his older ones and most likely from the late 1970's to somewhere in the 1980's. The name of this set is "Louis XIV / Luigi XIV", Louis XIV of Bourbon also known as "Louis the Great / Louis le Grand" or the "Sun King / Roi Soleil ", reigned as King of France starting on the 14th of May 1643, when he was 4 years old, until his death in September 1715. His reign of 72 years and 110 days is the longest recorded of any monarch of a sovereign country in European history, definitely worthy of having such a fine chess set crafted in his honor almost 300 years after his death and this set is fine enough to be in his famed Palace of Versailles.
One set has gold bodies with silver accents while the other has silver bodies with gold accents. From the king's scepter to the cavalry men's riding on rearing horses trimmed in finery, to the ornate towers with raised silver and gold repousse work the level of detail to each individual piece is incredible and they are all magnificent!
Each piece is individually hallmarked with the script "Piero Benzoni" makers mark on the back or on the backs of their legs, one cartouche along the table skirt bears his makers mark as well.
The 15 pawns stand 4" tall by 1.25" wide across their bases. The 4 knights stand 4-1/8" tall by 3.5" long across the horses body's by wide 1.75" across the bases. The 4 bishops stand 4-3/8" tall by 1.75" wide across their bases. The 4 rooks stand 4-3/8" tall by 1.75" wide across their bases. The queens stand 4-5/8" tall by 1.75" wide.

Copper, Brass, Wood by Andrzej Nowakowscy
A wonderful hand made chess set by Magda and Andrzej Nowakowscy of Warsaw Poland in 1977. The two camps represent Medieval-Viking figures. One side in copper, the other side in brass. Each piece is made of Brass and Copper and elaborated in details with decorative materials as needed.
The 19" x 19" Board is hinged to the box and made of alternating squares of copper and brass. It features embedded medallions and design elements such as weapons, swords and axes. The corners are further decorated with beautiful turquoise gemstones.
The case-box, about 5" deep, weighing 16 LB, can open to provide ample storage space to house the chess pieces and is padded with fabric of chess design. Each piece is marked on the base with the artists names. The pieces are unique, rich with expression and whimsical and no two are alike, all hand made.
Andrzej Jerzy Nowakowski was born on October 2, 1938 in Lublin, Poland. He graduated from the State High School of Visual Arts in Warsaw earning very high marks in artistic subjects - drawing, painting and sculpture. In the years 1957-1966 he devoted himself exclusively to artistic creation making watercolors and oil paintings, and drawing sketches and comics. During this period he discovered artistic metallic elastoplast, which became his love and passion lasting until the end of his life. He created the first works in metal: jewelry (bracelets, rings, brooches and necklaces) and what became the hallmark of his entire work - unique figurines.
The artistic value of these small sculptures, in which the artist made human life, sometimes grotesquely and amusingly, was noticed in 1966 by a visual artist prof. Adam Jabłoński, chairman of the ORNO Cooperative Council. At ORNO Andrzej Nowakowski worked for five years, learning the technologies and secrets of the profession of the artist-metalwork. Already in 1967 he obtained a professional diploma in the goldsmith trade and in 1973 together with his wife Magda Strzelecka, he opened his own goldsmith workshop, which became famous for its unique metal-plastic products, loaded with fanciful elegance and communicative form. Andrzej Nowakowski has been awarded many awards and diplomas for his creative work, including the Silver Cross of Merit. He ran the laboratory until his death in 2008.

Vintage artisan Greek Chess Set, mid 20th Century
Imaginative mid-century work by American artist from Sheffield Massachusetts(?) representing iconic figures of historic and art importance.
This very unique and rare chess set is truly thirty two sculptures with erotic(?) emphasis. The pieces are hand crafted and have a somewhat grotesque look and finish of famous art-sculptures. All the figures appear to be nude with their musculature on display. The King, a pot-belly monarch (Zeus sitting his throne in Olympia?), with a big nose and large chin, appears to be holding on his throne with a leg over one edge, the tumescence of his privates obvious. The (large) queen is standing on the toes of one leg with the other pulled up. She exhibits enormous wings and large breasts, holding a staff with icon for female at the top.
May be modeled after a statue of a Greek goddess possibly Nemesis, Nike, Aphrodite or even Athena. The Bishops heads are split at the top like horns, but sideways, with legs in a running-walking stance. They are holding a crooked top staff. The Knights seems to be modeled after the famous "End of the Trail", sculpted by American-born artist James Earle Fraser. The rooks are a figure sitting atop a turret which is held above a phallus complete with testicles. Finally, the Pawns are bowed-head men carrying staffs with knobbed tops, their bellies protruding, standing stoically.
It seems that the figures were created using a welding metal wire techniques.
The handmade pieces are in brass-bronze, non-magnetic alloy, one side darkened to create the desired contrast. The figures differ in style and size and are all finished using small globules around the bases and throughout the piece.

Modern art, Surrealism. Dali style art made into a stunning chess set. Decorative, innovative design chess set with the matching board. One side Gold tone the other Titanium.
